A day in the life of a live-in carer

1 Jan 2018

I draw upon my Saga training on the first morning, absorb and remember the care plan to begin with the right structure – the key is sensitivity and to really listen to the client and their family.

I’m currently looking after a lady with dementia and her husband who has all his faculties intact, although his mobility is starting to be a bit compromised – we have a routine that suits them, and they have the reassurance of knowing I’m there when they need me.

Their home, once upon a time, was where their three children grew up, and it’s so lovely that I can help them stay in a place with all those memories.

I have regular assignments visiting the same client every two weeks; over the years I’ve had all kinds of client: single and couples, some requiring much more care than others, some less mobile and others needing palliative care. I have gone through life-changing events with clients and their families, sat up all night waiting for ambulances, doctors or district nurses.

I have seen and done things I never thought I could cope with. I have learnt how to adapt, about perspective, and believe that everybody is owed sensitive care.

Would I choose to be a Saga carer again if I had my life over? In a heartbeat. Absolutely!
